Melanie Martinez: DDLG in the mainstream?

Recommended Posts

Ive noticed, this singer melanie martinez. I havent paid much attention to her, up until now she was a "little" singer. But now Shes really starting to gain some traction as an artist. And more and more people are starting to notice the little girl themed songs and such. Well what im wondering is, do you guys bringing ddlg to more of mainstream thing is good for the community. I know its always been kinda growing due to tumblr and stuff like that. But im honestly alittle worried, I'm afraid this worried this might make a bunch of confused young littles and daddies who dont know what theyre doing, into relationships that might not be the healthiest for either of them. So anyways, my question is, what do you guys think? do you think ddlg becoming more a mainstream is a good thing? Or is it gonna be a bad thing for the community? i wanna hear your guys's thoughts

I feel that it will be both a good and a bad thing. I feel like people will become more accepting if they see how mainstream it is and can learn about it, however, I agree with the fact that it will hinder the community because a bunch of scammers and mean people will enter the community looking for nothing but bad things.

Personally I think Melanie Martinez is quite popular in the ddlg community as she seems to be very ddlg themed, however I dont think people not familiar with the theme are going to know any better, in my experience they just assume she has a Daddy kink if anything. Time will tell if the two become linked to the public / vanillas. That is just my take on it as of now.

I agree with LoliPrincess, on one hand going mainstream could help people understand that our lifestyle isn't about pedophilia, but on the other hand it might attract all kinds of predators and actual children. I think I'd rather us continue to be misunderstood than to have children being preyed upon :(

Now, don't shoot me. This is my personal opinion.

I've never been a one for kinkiness in the mainstream. Or sex on TV. Or overly sexual songs and artists. I guess I'm kinda conservative in that sense but Mel isn't actually too open with it in her songs in my opinion.

I am a fan of her, but I don't know whether anyone listening to her music casually will link her with DDLG unless they were 'in the know', which I think is how most things should be when it comes to sex and kinkiness.

IMO the general public would just think she was using some pretty serious imagery and take it as an alter ego artsy thing, like Nicki Minaj becoming Roman, Bowie becoming Ziggy, Marina becoming Electra etc.

Edit: even if she is a little, I am so glad she isn't openly promoting it. Simply because it's something so many underage littles get caught up in without knowing the ropes, and get with bad daddies who only want one thing.

I agree with the both good and bad thing. I think that initially it will cause problems and a lot of crap will go down, but it will eventually lead to more people knowing about and wanting to know more about the lifestyle. This leads to more sources of information. Like anything not all sources will be good and such but ultimately it leads to more acceptance and knowledge. It could also lead to something of a witch hunt but there's always a risk when it comes to change and progress.

I 100% agree with this, Thats what i seemed to think, the general public wont think anything of it unless somewhat in the scene to begin with.

I love Melanie Martinez, but I only really linked her to ddlg once I already knew what it was, and I found out about ddlg through general "daddy kink" type stuff (and thorough research once I knew that's what I was into). It would take some serious researching on someone's part to get from Melanie Martinez, to daddy kink, to realizing what ddlg is and really getting into it. I have friends who are into ddlg who love Melanie because they know she's a little and they really appreciate the themes of her music, but I also have friends who have never even HEARD of people having "daddy kink" and they love Melanie because they think she's cool and quirky, and kind of like Electra Heart. Melanie doesn't talk about a literal 'daddy' in too many of her songs either, and vanilla people don't know what 'littles' are, so they don't pick up on it when she actually pretty much says she's a little in Tag, You're It.

"Looking at me through your window
Boy, you had your eye out for a little"

If someone actually finds out about ddlg through her, with the help of some other resources (like tumblr), it'd be someone who's done a lot of their own research and is into it anyway.

DDlg getting mainstream media attention would make a lot of people aware that what they're feeling, and have been feeling for a while, has a name. That it's an actual thing, and that there are communities gathered around it. It would give them a sense of belonging, as well as places to learn more about it.

I don't think that DDlg should be kept as some sort of exclusive club just because more attention means more creepy people will seep into the community. It's better to teach individuals about how to deal with creepy people like that instead of trying to prevent them from finding the community by keeping it a secret.

I think this is indeed a positive thing due to to the fact that if the vanilla audience gets a taste of ddlg it wont be as "weird" and it will be a a little bit more "socially acceptable". :D  But we will most likely probably get a mass horde of "ddlg ignorance" and a bunch of daddy's and littles who don't know what they're doing. -_-  Its like when 50 shades came out, it had positive and negative affects. Pros- Now bondage and things of the sort are seen as "hot" and "sexy" and a little more on the norm side. B)  Cons- a bunch of ppl began to do kinky shiz without proper knowledge of what they were doing, and a lot of "freak" deaths and accidents became more common.  I feel as though this is how it will be with our ddlg community. We'll get some pros and some cons, and after the ddlg rage dies down it'll be considered a little more common and average.

I am probably skeptical that the dd/lg dynamics becoming more mainstream is a good thing. It's been behind closed doors up until recent years and thought it was just my imagination when more ravers were adopting this form of kink/bdsm/lifestyle. While it opens more doors to interact with others it also can create bigger taboos that for the most part, have been unknown to the public. I felt the same way with raves becoming mainstream as I noticed a trend of toxic values and started bringing in people for the wrong reasons. This as well can bring people into the scene for the wrong reasons, and that only hurts us.

I don't mean to be blunt, but what I mean is that there will be a influx of 'daddys' only getting into this for sex and affection, or 'littles' trying this for gifts and attention, in the long run of things many of these people can just take advantage of those truly wanting to be part of something, where as they can simply walk away from this without thought. Some of us don't really have the capability's to "turn off" our kink, or lifestyle or how you would put it. Its a undertone of my relationships to the point where I cant really tolerate normal women at this point :/ so feel some people wanting to try this dynamic out not for the ddlg play, but rather just to use me. And I am sure littles have the same problem.

A google trend search brought up this
http://i.imgur.com/pCopIfX.png

So it has been more defined at the least. I became curios of the popularity of this dynamic when I found out a childhood friend was actually a little and one of my littles had a friend who was a daddy with a little as well.

Becoming more known and accepted is great, but becoming so popular so fast can give us a really bad look once its both portrayed and seen badly. We have not had much media coverage, but you cant say that what is covered is good.

The only thing we can do is be engaged in our works I guess. For me that means more then just one on ones and trying to do some public speaking at festivals where bdsm camps teach local rope and dominance seminars. Not to sure how others may get involved but if you have experience in some way, do share it local. I say all this because I have seen this happen in the past with something I loved, raving. Where increased popularity gave the name "raver" a bad image to the point where it means "drug addict" to most people. When I say I like to go to raves 90% of the time people now ask me "do you do drugs there?" or something along those lines.. I really don't want that same attention from people that find out I'm a daddy >< and in that case would rather it be a unknown.

I agree with yall, actually. I had never heard of her before this thread so I went to Google Play on my phone and downloaded and fell in love with the music and lyrics. There's.... little things that really you wouldn't pick up unless you were in this lifestyle....
