So as a nanny, I have cooked with kids' help for a while.  I thought I would post some recipes that I have either made or found that I tried with my kids so that the Littles can have fun making yummy food by them selves, or with help from their Caregiver. I think it'd be a lot of fun to have a thread of recipes for others to try!

Here's my first recipe. It came from a cookbook from the Chicago Children's Museum and the Washburne Culinary Institute. I tried it out with the kids I nanny and many of them liked it! Plus it looks very cute.

Chicken Salad Ice Cream Cones:

Makes 4 Cones

These cones end up looking like an ice-cream treat topped with a cherry. They are cute and fun to make!

Ingredients:

* 4 cups chicken, cooked and diced

* 1/4 cup pear, diced

* 1/2 cup green onions, diced

* 1 cup grapes, sliced in half

* 8 ounce can of crushed pineapple, drained of juice

* 1/4 cup low-fat mayonnaise

* 1/4 cup whipped cream cheese

* 2 cherry tomatoes sliced in half

* 4 ice cream cones

Tools Needed:

* Mixing bowl

* Cutting board

* Spoon

* Butter Knife

Caregiver or Big Space Preparation:

1. Cook and dice the chicken. Place in a small bowl and set aside.

2. Dice the green onions. Place in a small bowl and set aside.

3. Open and drain the can of Pineapple.

4. Dice the pear into quarters.

5. Children (Littles) can easily cut the grapes, pear, and cherry tomatoes with the butter knife. Just make sure that they are being safe and know how to hold the knife properly.

Making the Chicken Salad Ice Cream Cones!

1. Using the kid-friendly knife, slice the grapes, pear and cherry tomatoes in half. (Depending if the Caregiver or Big-side has allowed the Little to do this step)

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the chicken, mayonnaise, cream cheese, pear, green onions, and pineapple. (This part is super fun for Littles to do)

3. Divide the chicken salad in to four equal amounts.

4. Use a spoon to scoop the chicken salad into each cone.

5. Garnish the top of the ice cream cone with a cherry tomato half.

6. Eat the food!

Bonn Appetite!

this sounds so yummy! I think I might have to make a me-version of this with tuna instead of chicken~

I don't have any recipes to share but I remember as a kid when I got to eat pasta, I always had a hot dog or two sliced halfway up to look like an octopus. It was really fun and I'm sure it could be really nostalgic for some Littles!

Chocolate crackles (coco pops mixed with melted chocolate and set in cup cake patty pans) and you could add mini marshmallows if you like to make like a rocky road kinda version, cake pops are easy its just cake crumbs molded into a ball then poke an ice cream stick in and set in the fridge. Later, dip in chocolate and then cover with nuts or sprinkles whatever you can think of!

Biscuits/cookies are great fun! Using different cutters to make all kinds of shapes then decorating them with icing! Cupcakes again are another easy thing too and fun to decorate! If you don't know how to make icing/frosting or don't want to bother with the process, then you can easily buy the pre made ones at the supermarket that even come in the piping bags with the different nozzles for different pretty patterns.

I can always think of heaps of sweet treats but savory is a little harder. Your chicken salad ice-cream cones are a great idea and I'd love to find more recipes like that! When I'm more the adult me (I have a passion for food), I tend to want to try more technical dishes and ones that suit my adult tastes. However, when in little space I would love more recipes I can make (savory in particular) tailored to that!

Fruit face pancakes (pancakes decorated with a variety of fruit to look like a face) are another one. And you make the pancakes themselves look like mickey mouse by just dabbing a couple of drops of batter on each side of the pancake!

I like little paper stars idea of the hot dogs. But I think even just getting to make your own hot dog with all kinds of different toppings is fun! You can get those stand and stuff tacos now too so they stand on their own and are easy to fill! So tacos would be another fun one to create different kinds of flavors with all kinds of different toppings!

Does anybody know ice magic? That's what its called here it might not be the same everywhere but its the chocolate sauce you put over ice-cream and it sets hard? I actually haven't had it in ages but it used to be fun to draw on your ice-cream. Haha!

I remember that stuff! I think Hershey's used to have a chocolate and a strawberry flavor. I think they called it turtle shells or something?? Where you would squirt it on the ice cream and it would get solid? (Are we talking about the same thing?)

Yup that's it! You could make all kinds of designs on your ice-cream and it would go hard in seconds! Lots of fun! Ours is called Ice Magic and there's chocolate and choc mint flavor. I can't say I've seen the Hershey's ones though the strawberry sounds nice! :D

By the way, I found these on google! :)
