DaddyABQ Posted January 7 Report Posted January 7 (edited) When I'm looking for a new computer, I check to see if a particular OEM/Vendor has a refurbishment program. Years, ago, when I worked for Gateway, we were told that any computer that was returned, even if it had the smallest of problems, couldn't be sold as new, so they drop the price significantly and sell it as "remanufactured." These computers are generally just as good as the ones you buy brand-new, still have a warranty, and will last as long as any other machine. The last three machines I've purchased have all been from https://www.dell.com/outlet The only downside, really, is that you don't get to customize the machines (since they're sold as-is), but with a solid warranty and the money you save, I never considered that an issue. EDIT: Also, you can check places like FB Maketplace. I got a like-new laptop for $350 there. You have to be careful of scams, meet in a public place, and make sure that you get a chance to test the machine out to see that it powers up and such, but there are some great deals there. Kubi207 Posted January 8 Report Posted January 8 +1 for the Dell Outlet store that DaddyABQ mentioned. We've ordered from them several times over the years and haven't had any issues with them. Even some of the "Scratch & Dent" tagged items on there we rarely find any blemishes. One time out of probably 20 machines ordered with that tag we found a slight scratch but it was on the bottom of the laptop where you wouldn't see it anyways. Dell's Outlet also has deals on occasion. Typically it's just a warranty upgrade like extending it from one year warranty to three year for $20 or so which can give some peace of mind. If you find a machine you like on their site you like you can also call the number listed on the site and talk with the sales rep about it. It's been a few years since I last used them but sometimes they have random specials like a free warranty upgrade. They've also had some goofy specials for example my boss got $200 off a laptop from the outlet that was listed on there for $800 or so if he purchased a $10 wireless mouse with the machine over the phone. Not sure if their staff is still wheeling and dealing like this as Dell removed a lot of their sales staff a couple years ago. Whatever machine you pick I'd suggest getting one with at least 16GB of RAM. Some of the lower machines only list 8GB which isn't really enough for modern Windows anymore. 1
