shadowrider Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 I have a couple of bags of charcoal that are several years old and have been in storage. I tried to light some a few weeks ago and even with the torch it didn't want to light. So I came up with an idea using my chimney starter and non lethal fuel, no gas since I was gonna cook over it. I also don't trust those fireplace starters for a cooking fire. The other day I was cooking some bacon in the microwave, don't judge me, I was in a hurry. I always put the bacon on a few paper towels then add a couple more towels on top. When it's done the paper towels are saturated with bacon grease. So I started shoving the towels into a bag for safe keeping. This evening I put a few paper towels in the bottom of my charcoal chimney and added a layer of charcoal, then some kindling and more charcoal. The paper towels lit easily and burned hotter and way longer than the paper alone. The coals were blazing and ready to cook and the paper towels were still burning. Not to mention it smelled like bacon cooking. So bacon grease paper towels will be my new go to fire starter. I could use melted lard or any animal fat I suppose but for now this is what I'll be stashing in my ziplocks. I'll update as I try other fats.
beanbean Posted June 16, 2024 Report Posted June 16, 2024 You head me until bacon in the microwave 🤣 but bacon grease is a super good starter 1
shadowrider Posted June 16, 2024 Author Report Posted June 16, 2024 Sometimes it's hard to justify turning on the stove and making a mess for 3 or 4 slices lol. 1
