What am I doing wrong?

So as a new member I'm super excited to meet everyone and get to know them but.....sadly I notice not many in the chat. Anyhow, I had two people follow me and I accepted, I then followed them back, thinking we might be able to be friends. But when I tried to message them it says "you cant message xxx until you're friends". I am confused as how we all make friends if we can't talk to each other? Am I "doing it wrong"?

I think only certain people really use the chat and they seem to really love it, but not everyone uses it. I know I never have.

And yes, the friend request thing goes to ways, can be frustrating while you're waiting to talk to someone you think you might enjoy speaking with, but in the long run safer.
