SeamonkeyBrains Posted March 12, 2024 Report Posted March 12, 2024 Mostly just a post for the sake of getting thoughts out and seeing if anyone else has any input about things! I'm not sure if its just me, but does anyone else have a bit too much of an attachment to the consumable aspects of this topic? Every time I go somewhere or get groceries, I find myself so fixated on buying something new. A new sippie or stuffie or blanket or anything. Even just a piece of novelty candy or something with a character on it (this especially, media is so important to the childish part of me that even if i don't know the media, something with a character on it will always tempt me so much more than those without) because getting new things scratches that little side of my brain. If I were to guess my reasoning in my subconscious, it probably has to do with an actual childhood growing up without the means to get that sort of new, fun, stuff a lot. My family was hit hard in 2008, so most all of my stuff was handed down, thus instead of really getting a lot of new, shiny, girly things, I got a lot of handed down toys and clothes from my brother and other kids who's parents my mom was friends with. And that's good!! It saves money and is more environmentally friendly. But I guess the childhood thrill of the rare occasion where I got a brand new toy to take out of a box or a special overpriced snack with princesses and characters on it still peeks through in my own spending habits now that the money is my own. I guess since a lot of my own age regression comes from escaping back to the simplistic desires and thoughts of a child, it makes sense that that desire is still there. Now that wouldn't be a problem, but again now IM the one paying for the new shiny things!!! XD And I'm not at a stable enough place to make those sorts of impulsive, debatably wasteful, money decisions quite yet. I look forward to the day when I can! But its something I've noticed while working out my budget stuff lately. I'll be getting groceries and it almost feels like I wont be able to go on if I don't *also* get that cute 10$ bunny plush or if I switch out a loaf of bread for a box of cake mix so I can have fun and lick the batter off the spoon. I like to think I make the right choice enough times and that it will all pay off eventually, but man the temptation in the moment to forgo all responsibility and just waste my money on silly things that make me happy but don't keep me alive is SO strong. Again, I hope I'm not posting this in the wrong place. But I just wanted to get this off my chest because I've been thinking about it lately.
Middlespace Brat Posted March 13, 2024 Report Posted March 13, 2024 An interesting thought! I also try to be consumer-conscious, esp now that I only support myself. I totally get you about the whole "didn't grow up with money so now I overdo it a little" thing. It's hard and tempting, esp when you live in places that are heavily on capitalism like the USA. I get it. I think I justify it to myself because I tend to buy a good chunk of my little-stuff second hand, but not everyone is so lucky or has the means to do it. I think so long as we do these things with trying our best in mind, it'll all work out. It's not EVERYONE doing everything PERFECTLY, it's all of us doing it imperfectly! Now it being hard on the wallet? That's another thing lol. I try myself to have a separate budget to include little treats, that way I know I can have fun but not too much fun. But as littles we don't always want to stick to silly grown up rules! I know some people use sticker charts that way they work for the reward, so that's an option. Personally, I try to little-fy the things I HAVE to buy, that way it's a win-win! For example, I buy little-themed groceries, like dino nuggies or pbj or fruits. Then I'm still getting groceries, but they're also a littlespace treat, so it seems extra fun! Or you can always try to find budget friendly things. I play this game where I'm allowed to buy TEN WHOLE THINGS from the store that are littlespace-y. (What store? The Everything is a Dollar store!) Then I only spend like $10 buy have TEN WHOLE THINGS!!! All my notes aside, you definitely aren't alone in feeling like this
beanbean Posted March 13, 2024 Report Posted March 13, 2024 Lol it's all over now you don't have Togo anywhere really the adds find you know your interests and go after them it's consumer world and the people trying to sell you things are everywhere. They know more about you then ever before and us as people always be looking for the shiny items
ErickWcurls Posted March 21, 2024 Report Posted March 21, 2024 Yeah through high school I didn't have much clothes cuz my family went through a bankruptcy and didn't have that much money and when I started earning my own money I worked at Banana Republic and got a bunch of clothes from there and yeah I have a lot of clothes and I very much enjoy shopping.
