PennyGoodfellow Posted October 1, 2023 Report Posted October 1, 2023 This week's writing activity is to tell your classmates all about school where you are from! We are all from different states, and different countries! When you were a small child, what was school like for you? What was your favorite part? What did you not like? Share with the class! 1
Alisolte Posted October 1, 2023 Report Posted October 1, 2023 (edited) School is really big and really loud, but the teachers stand in the hallways and tell you where you’re supposed to go. I’m really shy so I kinda just lookit my shoes a lot and listen to their directions. They put us in alphabetical order, so that’s how you find your seat, and the desks are sometimes too big so my feetsies swing down and I can kick-kick-kick, but sometimes I get in trouble if I do it too much. There’s lost of stuff ALL OVER the walls in my classroom and my teacher has the alphabet over the whiteboard at the front of the room. Right now all of the desks are facing the whiteboard, but sometimes we’re allowed to put them together in groups. It’s the first day, so they gave us stickers to write our names on. They say, “Hello, my name is…” My teacher gave my crayons and construction paper! The other kids are talking a LOT but I’m just going to color until someone tells me what to do. Hopefully she reads us a story, soon! Books are my favorite! Edited October 1, 2023 by Alisolte 2 2

Vampiress Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 I moved around a lot so I went to a bunch of different schools and it was always a little different. I currently live in Washington state in the USA, but I have gone to school in both Washington and Texas. I always really liked English/Language Arts/Reading class (was called different things at different schools). It's always fun to read new books, and it was something I was good at. I also liked when we would go to the library because I like checking out books and taking them home. One of the best topics in school we'd learn was about dinosaurs. My least favorite was gym class. Sometimes it was fun if we did roller skating or interesting activities like that, but I didn't enjoy the team sports stuff because there were always kids who didn't want to be inclusive with others. 2 2 1
Ariadna Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Hi! 🌈 I'm from Argentina, Buenos Aires. 🇦🇷 When I was 6 years old I started primary school, and I graduated at 12 years old. My first school text book was called "Huaca la vaca" 🐄. It had stories and fun homework like drawing and painting. I used to love school trips too, I went to "Mundo marino" and meet the sea for the first time. 🐬⛱️ I didn't like gym class because I was really slow at running and have no coordination so everyone used to get mad at me. Besides, I used to have good grades but I was bad at maths so my family used to get mad too. I miss doing homework, so I hope we can draw and paint... and even do maths too because I want to learn! 🤓 5
PennyGoodfellow Posted October 2, 2023 Author Report Posted October 2, 2023 @Vampiress I moved a bit when I was a kid too - not states, but it's interesting how even schools in the same city can differ! Thanks so much for sharing! 1
PennyGoodfellow Posted October 2, 2023 Author Report Posted October 2, 2023 @Ariadna Thank you for telling us about school for you! Don't worry there will be lots of activities and even some math! 1
Guest Runa Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 When I started school I was 5 years old and the school I went to was very old! The building was from the Victorian era and it had separate entrances for boys and for girls. Everyone used the same entrances when I went there though! Inside the building the younger classes were on the bottom floor and up a winding staircase with an iron handrail was the older classes. It was such a mystery to the little kids what the upstairs was like and we used to dream about going up the those classes one day. The main hall of the building was very wide and the ceiling was very high. The floor was made of marble and there was a sand and water play area for Primary 1 and Primary 2. I loved to play with the water! I don't remember the first teacher that I had but my teacher in Primary 2 wore open toe shoes. During story time all the children sat on the floor around her feet while she read from whatever book we were going through at the time. I used to tickle her toes while she was reading! 🤣 If we were well behaved that week then the teacher would give us a sweetie on Friday afternoon when we left for the weekend. I always chose the same sweetie, a mint flavour one.
PennyGoodfellow Posted October 2, 2023 Author Report Posted October 2, 2023 @Runa I'm so glad that you have such lovely memories to share with us! The water play area sounds absolutely lovely!
PennyGoodfellow Posted October 2, 2023 Author Report Posted October 2, 2023 I remember when I was about 4 or 5 I started school. We all had blue and white plaid bags with our names written on them - I think there's a photo somewhere of me holding mine getting off the school bus! I would start my day watching Blue's Clues and once the show was over, that meant it was time to go wait for the bus! At school we had circle time, and then we were allowed to play in different areas. I really liked the block area! I remember that during circle time we'd have a BIG piece of paper and we would write down the weather, and the day of the week, there would be a color and a shape of the day. It was a really small building, but we had a play area outside with a seesaw, and some swings, although I was too scared to go on most of the big toys, and I'd stay in the sandbox! 3 1

Kali Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 I grew up in Cali and OK. I went to a Christian school for a few years. I remember playing flag football at recess and lots of Bible study. I was excited to get invited to play on the school flag football team, but we ended up moving. *sniffle* I've grown up hearing about a certain teacher and how her voice could stop us kids in our tracks. lol I had a bday party one year. I guess her son/daughter came. I remember running around, playing, bobbing for apples, etc. My parents would always tell the story of how she came into our backyard and the second we all heard her voice we froze! That was the thing. We were to freeze on the playground when teachers tried to get our attention. I guess it worked pretty good. *giggle snort* I was a latch key kid when I transferred to public school. I remember I had fun riding my bike to and from school. I don't remember a lot about actual school during those years. We moved it OK when I was in the... 4th grade maybe. I don't remember a lot about school then either. We lived in BFE and I rode the school bus. I had a friend that lived wayyyy down the road from us who rode the bus with me. The second school I went to in OK was pretty nice. I liked English class. We had to read a lot of books. The teacher had copies of the covers taped to the upper borders of the classroom walls. I think they had reading levels on them too. I was excited when I finished them all and got to pick extra books. The librarian there scared me for some reason, but she ended up being very nice. She gave me a ride to my parent's restaurant when I broke my foot during recess playing Pickle. 4
CompwicatedPwincess Posted October 3, 2023 Report Posted October 3, 2023 I went to school in Ohio. It smelled like dry sadness but I learned how to type like a cat so that was cool. I always got the free book at book fair because I was both poor and a nerd. I met a tall boy by playing Pokemon in the recess times, and we lived together for a while. That was neat. And it was right next to the church where we had boyscouts! That's my presentation. I was too little to get the slides to work though. 4
LilLamby73 Posted October 4, 2023 Report Posted October 4, 2023 (edited) My school day starts out with a very long walk down this lane to where the bus picks me up. Thankfully there is an older boy who we meet who helps me out on days my Momma can’t walk me to the bus stop. The bus ride is super long too and I often fall asleep. I would have missed getting off the bus if my older friend hadn’t helped me out! Our school is fun and the teachers are all so nice! Mr. Weatherbee is our principal and he has actually taken me home when I’ve gotten confused thinking my mom was going to come get me when I should have gotten on the bus. But he never gets mad at me. I am in a class with 4 grades together. We have color everywhere! There are colorful carpet squares and squishy bean chairs. We do special creative things and I don’t have to worry about being bored ever! We can move to different circles (levels) if the work we are doing is too easy for us. When we get all of our work done, we can take turns going up to the loft and reading on the comfy cushions! Every afternoon Mrs. Ruesink reads to all of us and we all listen and pay attention to her. She is so fun and crazy and silly but don’t make her mad by rolling your eyes at her even if you don’t know what that means! You will find yourself out in the hall and in trouble! Austin and Ben are twins and they are my best friends! We play at recess together every day. Sometimes when we play at the back of the playground by the woods (because we are explorers and adventurers and we make up our own stories) it takes us a long long time to run back up to the school when the bell rings and so sometimes the teachers have to wait for us. The more popular boys will play tetherball and the girls will jump rope double dutch. I will sometimes jump rope but I don’t like hitting the tether ball. Besides I like the stories that Austin, Ben, and I make up so much better. My school is so much fun!! Edited October 4, 2023 by LilLamby73 2
SweetLu Posted October 4, 2023 Report Posted October 4, 2023 I started kindergarten early (turned 5 the week before school started). Don't sound strange now, but then, I was almost too young. Also meant i was always the youngest one in my class and it made me even more shy i thinks. We always start the day in circle time. What's really neat is that I got the classroom with the circle room that's part of it. So circle time was for realz circle time in the circle room. 🤭 I liked the coloring an' cutting an' pasting the mostest. Sometimes Mrs. B lets us paint! Second. I really likes the reading table where we learn the sounds letters make & put them together into words. Practicing writing is fun, but I'm not real good at that yet. Math stuff is confusin' an' i don't get it or like it. 2 1
Andriel_Isilien Posted October 4, 2023 Report Posted October 4, 2023 My first school was in Iowa. 🌽 The building was about 100 years old! 🏫 I remember the cafeteria food had this funny smell, so I always had a home lunch that I brought with me. Once in a while I would get a hot lunch when it was pizza day but the teachers would make us eat nearly everything on the tray before being dismissed to recess. I was a very picky eater and didn't like anything else they served. 😝 I remember by the end of my first year in Kindergarten, my class colored little paper books and we all read the words out loud together... Everyone except me because I still hadn't learned how to read words yet! 😳 I was too scared/embarrassed to say anything. My favorite letter was Z and all I knew how to spell was ZOO. I liked animals so much and loved zoos even back then. I remembered Show & Tell was one of my favorites because I could bring my CareBear stuffie again and again. 2 1

Hyperbby Posted October 4, 2023 Report Posted October 4, 2023 I went to lots of different schools but my very first one was a Christian/Mennonite school. It was really tiny and had every class from K-12 all in the same building. We had to wear shirts and only in boring colors. I had lots n lots of older siblings who already went there who already had friends of their own. I was really shy so it was nice to feel like I already had some friends. It was really sad when I had to go back to my classroom without them. There were only a few kids but the teacher introduced us all. I was so nervous I was basically vibrating. Everyone got along though and then we got lunch and recess! My school wasn’t very far from my house at all so I got to run home as fast as I could and make a sandwich before going to play. They had sand and monkey bars and swings! It was my favorite! I really liked learning more about letters and words. We had cards with colorful pictures that matched the letters. Fox for the F and so on. Numbers were kinna scary though. The nap time was the hardest! I didn’t wanna make noises and get in trouble but I was so hyper that just laying there felt like torture! 2 1

Redbottompunkin Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 🏫 I grew up in a smaller town, in NJ. I would wake up every morning so excited to start my day. Always an early riser. The first few years I went to a private Catholic school, all I can remember there is how the school always smelt like food because the cafeteria was right as you walked in. I was afraid of the nuns because everyone always talked about how they used rulers to hit your hands if you were bad. So I made sure I was always good. I remember cookies and milk and all of us having our own play dough containers, that smelled so yummy for some reason. 📚Later, when I moved into a public school. School felt very different. I felt lost there, so many kids and so much movement all the time. But I loved story time in the library and when my teachers would ask me to be a helper. I remember the mile walk to get to school and the mile back. We did plays once a year and always had a big yearly feel trip. My favorite being to Philadelphia, PA in 5th grade. 🚌 1
uni.sprite Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 School was super scary! I was very slow growing up and I have super bad number dyslexia so I would get yelled at alot for not completing stuffs 😖 It was very stressful! And unfortunately I had some very inappropriate teachers and such. (Super happy I graduated a few years ago!) My favorite time was nap times waayyy back in kindergarten ☺️ And reading time! I have alot of bad memories from schools so there's not much else I can share! Just happy to be here and my littlespace accepted. Very excited to try to keep up with the homework!! 1 1
CodeName: Trouble Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 I had a horrible time in school and cried every day not to go 😖 Not much good to say here. Being dyslexic, an 'undercover' Neuro-spicy individual and in the lower middle class while attending an old money rich kids school was absolutely torture in every way. I don't care to recall much. Things I do remember fondly: I loved seasonal art projects that we got to do and decorate the room with 🥰 arts and crafts was always a fun time and we would often have special treats on themed days. My favorite subject as a smol was always science, I was so fascinated with learning about the world; about water cycles, nature, space, weather and going on fieldtrips and making cool projects to explore it... became much less excited when they started making us read textbooks about it instead lol. Sing alongs in the library every week Activities incorporating the senses, like eating sugar cubes to learn about taste and stuff like that making oobleck 😁 1
