This thread is intended to be a resource for those interested in growing their own food without committing to a garden plot. This can be an expensive hobby, so it's my hope we can share a spirit of frugality and community while helping others!

Please comment below with tips you think are ESSENTIAL to getting started on a container garden. Eventually I'd like to compile responses into a read-only page similar to the Zone Guide in the index.

My first piece of advice is to find out which seed libraries are in your area - some local libraries, gardening clubs, community centers, etc will offer this. Seeds are not a high cost item (that would be dirt and containers), but it's a good way to get some common herbs and veggies. The other plus is that you may be able to connect with knowledgeable, local individuals.

My second piece is to start small. I overwhelmed myself the first year by trying to do it all. There's no shame in starting out with one tomato plant! This might mean you purchase a pre-grown plant to transplant or you grow one variety of plant from seed. Either are great options that come with their own benefits and challenges.
