Ghost1031 Posted May 19, 2023 Report Posted May 19, 2023 Every spring, I do a thing called plant day. Basically, once the weather is deemed warm enough, i spend the day moving the house plants outside/to the porch for both my plants and my parents'. It is also when i re-pot any plants that need it. 2022's plant day shall forever be known as 'the great aloe vera battle' since it took me an entire day to re-pot just the aloes and couldn't even get to re-potting any other plant that needs it. I've learned a lesson since then and decided to make plant day into several weeks and will try to re-pot a few plants whenever i have the free time cuz holy crap, there are so many plants that need some love xP. I'll post updates (cuz y not, plants are cool) of the progress as i go, starting with my 2 desk buddies (dracaena marginata & peace lily) who really needed to stretch their roots 😄 Do y'all have any interesting re-potting stories? Or how about tips&tricks? My tip is that anything can be a planter if you stick enough drainage holes in it 1 1
gemmy Posted May 19, 2023 Report Posted May 19, 2023 Your dragon tree is gorgeous! What kind of soil do you use? No interesting story yet! But I've noticed my philodendron is getting a little tall for its current home, which is scary because the pot is HUGE. It'll be a two person job once I muster up the courage 🫡

Good luck with your philodendron! It sounds like its a very happy plant 😊
Andriel_Isilien Posted May 19, 2023 Report Posted May 19, 2023 One little tip I have is my guinea pigs 😉 Their little beans (poops) make excellent fertilizer that I mix in the soil when repotting. The plants love it! I say that is how my guinea pigs earn their keep LOL

So the one I have is absolutely thriving and gorgeous in the world’s tiniest pot 😂… the reason I hesitate to repot it is because a) it’s doing so well and b) the last time I repotted an aloe he was not happy! When choosing a new home: how much bigger should the pot be? Should the pot be deeper or not? And do you water generously or at all after moving them? I have a succulent/cactus plant (I forgot what it’s called) that absolutely hates having too much room when repotting it. One died when I put it in a pot that was too large and apparently that’s a thing. Plants are such divas! 😂😂 Any aloe-specific tips? Much appreciated! Aloe are some of the biggest divas out there 🤣. Even just rotating them can cause them to go into shock. There's no way to prevent it when repotting however if the plant is healthy, it'll bounce back after a few weeks if you ignore it 🙃. As for determining the size for pots, aloe love to be crowded. When im repotting the aloe, im usually just removing the babies and replacing the soil when i put the og plants back in their containers. The monster below has lived in the same container for the past 7 years. I'll increase its container size only when the aloe becomes too top heavy to stay upright and only by a couple inches cuz just like your succulent, aloe doesnt like having too much room (for depth, the container only needs to be deep enough for the aloe to stand up straight with maybe a little space to grow). Watering wise, i moisten the soil mix well before i use it to keep the dust down and water it a bit when im done repotting to settle the soil and clean off the leaves. After that, i dont water it again until it has bounced back from the shock and the soil is bone dry. As long your aloe is happy and thriving, you wont need to worry about repotting it yet 😁. As for an aloe tip: aloe are social plants and love being planted together in the same pot. Plant 2 or more together and they'll start growing babies really fast, but be warned, they reproduce faster then rabbits and you'll end up with more aloe than you can give away O___o 2

Ghost1031 Posted May 25, 2023 Author Report Posted May 25, 2023 Update on the (never-ending) repotting: i repotted a bunch more plants including some of my sadder succulents, split up the nursery pot of pothos and put those into pots to give to friends, and potted some babies inside my new planter friends 😗. I think im half way thru all the plants......maybe 😅 1
Ghost1031 Posted July 29, 2023 Author Report Posted July 29, 2023 New update on the re-potting saga! Several weeks ago, I managed to repot all of my plants (at the time, of course theres more now) and just had the ones at the parental units left. And then the heat/humidity showed up like the kool-aid man and life happened so i still havent done those 🤡 The plants i did repot tho are doing great tho! Even my very sad looking peperomia has put out a bunch of new growth 🥰🥰 Ive been super busy with work/life since i repotted all these lil guys that a few tried getting squirrelly on me 🤣 my swiss cheese plant decided to grow a leaf through the leaf of another swiss cheese vine and a few of my vines decided to root themselves in their neighbors' pots 😅😅 oops 1
Andriel_Isilien Posted August 26, 2023 Report Posted August 26, 2023 I had this little fella facing the window for a few months. Today I was rearranging my plants and I found him busting through the cheap plastic 💪 Time to repot, hahaha! 1

Andriel_Isilien Posted June 7, 2024 Report Posted June 7, 2024 A neighbor that knows I collect plants handed over their Ficus tree they didn't want to care for anymore. The thing looked cramped in that small pot it had been in for about 4 years. We'll see how this fella does with more wiggle room for the roots.
