Yoshi_Yoshi Posted May 14, 2023 Report Posted May 14, 2023 I have a light hearted controversial topic to bring to the table today: renaming plushies that come with names. Yay or nay? Let me know your thoughts, abd if you done it before what name you picked and why? Personally I am plushie renamer, but I always feel kind of guilty about it, especially with beanie babies and squishmallows. As they have there own names and personalities established and I feel like I'm giving them mini identity crises. But also if plushies did have the secret capacity to feel, maybe they would appreciate my clever name change. For example my sea cow squishmallow came with the name Alita and I changed her name to Bessea. Which I think is more clever and fun 3
gemmy Posted May 15, 2023 Report Posted May 15, 2023 For me it depends! I will rename stuffies that come with names. I won't rename stuffies that I previously named myself, even when I start to think the name is silly. I just never use it outside my head again 😅

My immediate thought when I read this was "it's just like having a pet, the name I wanna give them is the name I wanna use to bond with them." And, if you need any reassurance re: identity crisis, you can think of it ( 👑 I GRANT THEE PERMISSION, A TRANS WOMAN WHO CHANGED HER NAME 😛 ) through a queer-name-change perspective: imagine that, like a queer person trying out a new name for themself, you're helping them grow and find their true name, the name that fits them and makes them feel happy and seen and validated! Omg that's so cute, I love that

Sometimes my plushies just get stuck with descriptions as names. Like bee bear or party archie, and even if I think of a true name the deception names is always to ingrained in me too change it XD 1
Middlespace Brat Posted May 15, 2023 Report Posted May 15, 2023 I'm 100% a stuffie-renamer. I think that each stuffie is an individual with their own personalities and stuff, and they come to life when you personally adopt them! I rename Squishmallows and stuff all the time. I feel like it's kinda like Toy Story, like Buzz is made just like every other Buzz toy, but he's unique to Andy and to himself, personality-wise. Does that make sense lol? 1

Yeah that does make sense I like that idea alot!
Righan Posted May 15, 2023 Report Posted May 15, 2023 While I am not a little, I do have quite a few stuffies ... and I guess it depends. If its an established character, like Mickey Mouse, then I think it would feel weird to me to rename it. On the other hand, if the manufacturer just has a gimmick where they provide each stuffy with a name to make it more personal ... like they used to do with Cabbage Patch Dolls ... then I don't think that really counts ... naming it was arbitrary and probably done by a computer ... it wasn't about a relationship with the stuffy or its personality. That would be like if the hospital auto-named babies so they'd have a name until the parents chose one. I also would not rename a stuffy that I got from someone else. That person is trusting you with that stuffy and its care, which I presume is partially about maintaining its identity as the stuffy they had .... a continuation of the same entity. Like if they asked you to watch over their pet or child. 1 2
Kittyara207 Posted May 16, 2023 Report Posted May 16, 2023 Like Beanie Babies too. They have a name but the stuffie hasn't been addressed by their forever CGs, friends, roomies or besties so no major attachments have been made. If however you want to rename them I think a heart to heart with them. Like Terry had a name on him when I got him. It was Joe. Now I am not saying Joe is a bad name but Joe did not fit him. And he responds better to Terry the Terrible Alligator. I think offering the option to said stuffies and seeing how they feel about it is important. We all have names we're given. Most have nicknames or names we prefer. My name at work, the one my family calls me, my friends call me...They are all different but yet I still associate with me. Renaming people's children could be fun though. Maybe depending on their attitude or something. Hmmm...considering such. 1
Guest PrincessNK Posted June 12, 2023 Report Posted June 12, 2023 I rename them, but feel guilty for awhile afterward till the new name settles in. 😆
lil Mo Posted June 12, 2023 Report Posted June 12, 2023 Stuffies totally need a name!! They become part of your family and therefore need a name.. even those that are like Mickey Mouse because there are so many out there and maybe they're just Mickey Mouse out there, but becoming part of your family they become special and need their own name even of it's just a bit different from the original name. So not naming them is more like not fully accepting them which would be really sad..
Nixie Posted June 20, 2023 Report Posted June 20, 2023 Yesss!! They need more personal names...I feel like their store names are just a suggestion XD but...I do feel guilty too 😅
lilpincess Posted June 20, 2023 Report Posted June 20, 2023 I rename most of them. Like my squishmallow kitty I got because she’s just like my kitty. And squishmallows and others like that that come with names aren’t the same stuffie for everyone in my opinion, so renaming if it feels right is totally appropriate.
Sloth Fairy Posted June 21, 2023 Report Posted June 21, 2023 I rename them except one, it has my Daddy's name. So when we get together if I start calling that name it'll be funny. I'll be like, I wasn't talking to you Daddy 😂
