Spring 2023 Starters

Today was a day I played in the dirt. I have bell peppers and spinach that I started months ago indoors to transplant into the vertical gardening pots. I'm also including the basil that I bought at the grocery store last year in hopes it will keep getting bigger!

I’ve never grown spinach before! 😍 I’m growing sorrel - it’s a lot like spinach - but you can do so much with spinach! I wanted to try kale but I don’t know if the bugs would get it right away. 😂

I think marigolds are a natural repellent for bugs. I also heard about mixing vinegar with a bit of dish soap (and maybe salt?) into a spray bottle can help deter bugs away from leafy greens. I have to look that up again though.

@Andriel_Isilien

I have researched marigolds a few times and it seems the jury is still out on how effective they are at deterring bad bugs (or if they do deter bugs like cabbage worms, the marigolds apparently steal water and nutrients from the cabbage, lol), but they still attract some beneficial bugs! 😊

I know some gardeners use epsom salt to deter some pests (it’s not an actual salt but magnesium sulphate). I’m curious about vinegar and dish soap. I think vinegar neutralizes soap? I’ve honestly given up on most natural or chemical sprays and just use the hose to blast bugs away. 🤣😂

I went to dig up where I saw the tip about making your own bug repellent spray. I LOVE this account for tutorials on gardening!

Update on my starters. I transferred most of them to the vertical garden pots; spinach, bell peppers, and basil. I had then planted baby greens or something too that are taking off.
