Fist day at my new job.

….. 👋🏻 Hi.

I’ve been struggling in my home lately with feeling like I’m not really listened to. I’m “heard” but I feel like things go in one ear and out the other sometimes here and it makes me shut down and not want to talk. This community has given me a lot , such as a place to talk about things where I normally don’t feel very listened to or a place to let my thoughts out since I genuinely don’t have friends in real every day life so using this forum as a journal sometimes helps. I’d like to share a little bit about my first day at the new job.

I’m terrified of change. I embrace it as much as I can when it happens but it puts my stomach in knots… a big change like a new job … add my avoidant personality disorder , lack of self esteem , feeling unappreciated and we’ve got a storm folks. I’m stressed the fuck out.

This job is a perfect opportunity for me and I am so afraid to mess it up. The job itself is simple enough , just a lot to learn and how to do things the “correct” way at this place. Working a new computer system , lots of numbers and codes and customer service.

As terrified as I am … my new co workers are really sweet 🥹 I’ve always had issues working with or being around females. I do NOT get along with women in real life. Online it’s much easier but in real life more often than not hearing really feminine voices and extreme girly energy they can put off makes me really aggressive. I work with all females now except for the dispatch technicians -_____- Fuck me right ? On top of all my stresses I was terrified of being in an office full of women and being the odd man out.

Guess what ? Turns out I was being a pussy (as far as the co workers are that is). Living up by the mountain I should’ve expected it , but all the girls there are tomboys ! They all dress either similar to me or just jeans a sweater and boots ! They were all super fucking welcoming , got me my own cubicle and even got me some welcoming gifts for joining the team !

They got me a packet up bubbles , a stuffed gorilla to hang on my cubicle and his name is Geraldo the Gorilla and he’s a customer service representative 😎 ,  (how did they know I’m a monkey ? 🤔) as well as a funny flip card thing for my desk.

My first day was honestly a little overwhelming because I expect so much of myself , at the end of the work day my new manager goes “You’ll fit in great here , you have a good energy and you stayed awake your first day. I fell asleep my first two days.”

EXCUSE ME WHAT ?! 😨 She laughed at my reaction and told me to chill out. She said that things can get really monotonous with all the numbers so she gets it if we get worn out and tired from that and the customers.

My manager - She’s kind of high strung like I am , she’s really sweet but I can tell she wears herself to the bone. I’m hoping I can help take work load off her shoulders. She’s really sassy too , she’s really good at telling people what’s what but sounding extremely professional while doing so.

My Customer service lead - She’s so cute and frail I just wanna protect her 🥹 She’s the one who showed me around the office , she has secrets stashes of candy all over her desk and the cupboards. So far I’ve seen her secret stash of tootsie rolls and Reese’s pieces. I haven’t asked her yet but I can tell she likes anime. She offered me a tootsie roll but they aren’t vegan. Sad day.

My payments processing and parts ordering lady : SHES SO FUNNY ! She collects stress balls and brings them into work for everyone. While I was there my manager popped two of them ! The payments lady had a little bag full of more ready to go. When she hung up from a call I overheard her say “some people are just demons”. She seems like a really cool lady.

The other CSR that I’ll be teamed with - Bro she is very similar to me. During my interview they told me “you’ll get along great with A—“. Which made me nervous because normally when people tell me that I end up hating the person. Not with her ! She’s a fuckin giant , she’s literally like six feet tall lol she towers over me. She rarely sits down (we have attachments on our desk to convert it to a standing desk computer) and she’s wild. She burps all the time when she’s not on a call and she immediately said “SUP DUDE” when we met. I think we’ll get along juuuuust fine. 💪🏻

Overall , I’m still really stressed out and afraid to mess this opportunity up. Today is going to be my second day and I’m have the jitters really bad still …. I just really like this place so far. I got really lucky that my co workers ended up being so cool , it definitely helps alleviate some stress.

Knocking on wood it’ll turn into my career and I can become a part of the company family.

Today's mantra. Have the same faith in yourself and your abilities that you have in those around you.

You got this.

I'm glad the team seems to be a good fit. I've been in places where I was like nahh I gotta go and it sucks.

And I'm trying to picture a 6 foot version of monkey, that could be intimidating lol.

Take it day by day, listen and learn, and before you know it you'll be training the newb cus you've been there a few years and you wonder where the time went.

Oh man, don't like first day jitters. Its never easy to start something new. It sounds like an awesome place though. So happy for you. Once you get used to it and it becomes a routine you'll be on fire.

It's a relief how you described your coworkers, especially the 6-foot-tall burping giant. 😄 I'm so happy for you, girl! 👏 You deserve all the possible best here 💗 I hope things settle down for you in the coming days and weeks. Try to pace yourself and allow things to unfold naturally. It's hard because we want to figure out and get it over with now. This is an exciting new adventure for you! You can do it! That Gorilla is a good sign! 🦍

Here's a Motivational Speech by my favorite polar bear doggo. (Swap STUDY to WORK and GOOD GRADES for EVALUATIONS... and probably YEAR to MONTH because this year is nearly over, hahaha)

When you first posted about getting the job it seemed perfect.  Learning the specifics of a new job is always rough. Just give yourself time. Write stuff down or use cheat sheets if need be.

I've never had good luck with female co workers either. Rumor has it I'm independent and hardhead.(can you believe it?) I think it's more like there's my friends and my work and I guess I don't like for them to mix. Just to say, you're not alone. Just be as nice and friendly as you can. Just to keep your work time happy. But remember, work and life is not the same thing.

I think you'll do great. As long as the monotony of data entry CSR doesn't kill your spirit.  LOL

Oh wow I am so happy for you! I was nervous at first when you said you were mostly working with women, but this sounds like a good group for you! Fingers crossed, maybe you have found your people! I hope things just continue to get better and that you really enjoy your time there. They sound like they're good people with all very interesting personalities that have found a rhythm to work well together and I think you'll find your place in that work dynamic soon enough. Great job on getting through your first day!

I thought I would show you guys my work space :3

I still have to decorate it how I want (I will absolutely be hanging up MHA posters all over) , I also still have to put together my standing desk contraption. But for now , this is my cubicle ! I feel so grown up 🥲

I thought I would follow up with this , and just make it about my first week.

This new company I work for is really thoughtful and sweet. We had a meeting today and afterwards we all got to decorate Christmas cookies that you can make into ornaments. They even gave me a Christmas card with a visa gift card in there with 50$ on it. I was so shocked , I’m only five days in tomorrow at this place and they’re really that nice ? I’ve been blown away by their appreciation and kindness. It was a really long day but there was a lot of sweet moments at work that made me feel nice.

Another follow up …

We had a company Christmas party with all the technicians too ! They all got their own cars and presents and so did the service reps.

How cute and thoughtful ? I thought that was really nice. The party was this last Thursday.

I also wanted to share a little more of just my new daily life. The headset is annoying but the candy is nice 👍🏼

I guess this is no longer about my first day - but more about my ongoing experience the longer I stay at this company 😅 Fine with me as I like telling these little stories and my experiences so far.

I get along SO WELL with all the technicians. They’re always cracking jokes and I appreciate that I can bully them a little bit and they’re not over sensitive.

One of my technicians ( We will call him S ) could tell I was stressed out and he sent me a gif over the teams chats of a chicken inside of soup swimming around …. Lol what the fuck ? When I got back from lunch he asked me if I had chicken soup , I replied “No , I had a bagel with vegan cream cheese and cukes.”

He goes , “What the hell is a cuke?”

I replied , “……. A cucumber… duh.”

He said that his friend makes home made pickles.

I said , “No. cucumbers are raw pickles. Not the same.”

He had never heard cucumber be called that before. Well he asked me for a favor and apparently my nickname with him is Pickles now -_____-  In return I have dubbed S “ CUKE BRAIN “.

My other technician ( We will call him R , and he’s my favorite out of all the technicians I think ) has major OCD like me and is a germaphobe. He’s been training how to do oven / range / downdraft / hood repairs - HE DOES NOT LIKEY LOL I find it highly entertaining that someone with OCD and germ phobia problems like R is one of the top technicians 😂 Our conversations usually crack me up throughout the day.

That's so good to hear! 😁 Having a supportive team that you can be both serious and silly really makes the work environment. The name Pickles sounds endearing 🥒

Tapping back in here to show off an office toy I was gifted …. It’s called the RockerX board and I am fucking OBSESSED. I’d prefer a treadmill under my standing desk - but after using the board for a few days I think I actually like it better. It’s like being on a skateboard / surfboard without actually moving ! It keeps my brain hyper focused while my body is busy balancing.

Here are some clips of me being a hooligan testing out it’s toughness and goofing off between calls.

It’s been a crazy couple months at work , and that’s putting it mildly.

The plus side ? I’ve infiltrated all of the technicians , they’re all my little minions and I’ve even broken down our ex marine into joking with me about Adventure Time characters. He calls me LSP (Lumpy space princess) and I call him Magic Man.

If you ever hear me talk about Magic man at work , just know it’s about this guy :

Building strong connections with your colleagues is a fantastic way to create a positive work environment. It's heartwarming to hear that you've even given each other nicknames inspired by Adventure Time characters – LSP and Magic Man.

It was a good time with the technicians at that job ! I’m actually still friends with Cuke Brain and Magic man , but I’m no longer at that job. I’m in a completely new environment now in the financial world 🫠

BUT I still make buddies wherever I go :3

Well, the people you work with can make a huge difference. Sounds like you’ve got a solid crew already, which is half the battle. I’ve been there, where you’re nervous but also excited at the same time.
If you’re thinking about long-term career growth, though, it might be good to look into other opportunities down the line. One thing I’ve found helpful in other fields is checking out training programs for different career paths. For example, if you’re curious about becoming an electrician or just exploring different trades, there’s a lot of info online that can guide you through the process. Here’s a link to a site that helps people get started: https://www.electricianclasses.com/
