MissNMTX Posted November 22, 2022 Report Posted November 22, 2022 I asked on my own social media and thought I'd ask here too for a variety of ideas. I'm looking to start a new holiday tradition just for myself. Since I haven't done one since I was a kid I thought I'd do an advent calendar. There are so many! Anyone have ones you really love?๐๐ โค๏ธ 1
Little kaiya Posted November 22, 2022 Report Posted November 22, 2022 My Wife, Daddy and I LOVE advent calendars and do them every year. I get my Wife one from David's Tea as she's a tea aficionado. She does a custom one for me from Purdy's and my Daddy we get one depending on the year. So far His have ranged from a Kinder one to a Lindt one to a mini funko pop one. We also do a custom one for our doggo and will add one next year for the new puppy ๐ถย 1
Barney048 Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 Okay, so this is a tradition I used to have but kind of neglected these past few years cause you know, busy/lazy. Me and a friend used to make advent calendars for eachother. Well "make" is a bit of an overstatement. We ordered blank ones from ebay. They were like a wooden house with 25 windows each representing the days leading up to christmas. It was quite expensive, so if you are crafty I suggest you make it at home yourself ๐ . So in each window we'd put a piece of paper with a task and a sort of candy which you could only eat once you completed said task. You'd open the window corresponding to the day that morning and only then see what task it was. The tasks were all christmass/winter themed, so we'd both enjoy the season to the fullest.(Like go buy christmas gifts for family, go try ice skating. Go sledging, go listen to carolers,...) Plus it was nice not knowing what was instored for us untill that morning, kindoff like upening up gifts on Christmas morning.ย 2
MissNMTX Posted November 23, 2022 Author Report Posted November 23, 2022 @Barney048ย I love that these are all experiences and not things. Sadly, there's no one that will do this for or with me and I don't really think I'm creative enough myself. I also don't need 24 days of chocolate, hot chocolate, tea, wine. I don't think I even really need 24 straight days of coffee ! Nor do I need 24 mini perfumes or beauty products (though I'm leaning towards that.๐) 1
Andriel_Isilien Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 (edited) I just bought one for my pet guinea pigs!ย ๐ฅฐย More exciting for me if I make it about them.ย ๐โ๏ธ๐ This is a peek from last year's ย I'm trying a tea advent calendar for myself since I love tea.ย ๐ต It has a sample of different flavors for each day that I can try. Sloth Fairy Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 I think having one that has different self care things/suggestions in each spot,ย would be cool . One that says write one thing down that makes you smile; Have a spa day, that could be doing your nails, hair orย whatever; Dress in your favorite outfit and take a selfie; Go outside and take a photo of something beautiful or cute; Write a poem; Create a holiday craft; Have a tea party; Buy yourself flowers to put on your table; Have a bubble bath;ย I'm sure I could think of more.ย ย 1 1
Nymph Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 I bought a fancy skincare one two years ago and I loved it soooo much!! my skin was glowing by new years eve lol it was my first time and figured I would make it a tradition for myself. Last year I was sick so I didn't really celebrate christmas so I skipped it but been keeping an eye out for something this year, it would be a lot more fun to do it with a friend like Barney! I like the idea of the task too but since I don't have anyone to do it with I just need to find something premade so it doesn't ruin the surprise XD
Guest Posted November 23, 2022 Report Posted November 23, 2022 (edited) Maybe get brown paper bags (or color of choice) and decorate them. Put your goodies in each one and close it up, e.g. decorative bow, WASHI tape, etc... Then before numbering them, mix them up good!ย Then adhere the numbers to each one and put them on display! Tada! Each day will be a surprise still and it can still be enjoyed by yourself!๐ Edited November 23, 2022 by Lil Juju Spell check and typos

The tasks were random at first look, but we gave tasks to eachother in a thought out manner. Like they were all christmas/winter themed, but they were all something that we knew the other person wanted to do, but most likely wouldn't without that extra push. MissNMTX Posted November 23, 2022 Author Report Posted November 23, 2022 @Nymphย when I was looking last night at first I got a bit discouraged, because I thought I'm by myself and I don't need that much of any one thing. Plus, I live in an apartment and don't really have the storage for all the little bottles of this or that. Not do I have a partner to do activities with ( not that you have to have one, but...) Then...I found an ELF one(the makeup brand) only 12 days, but at a decent price point and with full size products. If I end up doing it most likely will be that oneย
Little kaiya Posted November 24, 2022 Report Posted November 24, 2022 (edited) A friend of ours shared the idea with us of doing a reverse advent calendar. Basically you put different food items in a box each day so like a box of cereal, canned veggies, rice, etc., and on Christmas Eve you donate tge box to a local foodbank. They sent us a picture of the list but I can't shrink the image small enough to post ๐ That said, my Wife, Daddy and I have all agreed this is something we are going to do this year. A bit of a twist on advent calendars but one that really resonated with us as a family. Edited November 24, 2022 by Little kaiya 1 1
