There are pairs of pants that fit like a dream but are experiencing such wear and tear beyond simple repairs. I have used this trick many times as I go thrift shopping for jeans that fit at the waist but the legs part needed altering. Usually I prefer skinny jeans but I have made this work with other styles of pants. What you need is a sewing machine and then a pair of those good old favorite pants with the fit you love the most.

Go find yourself a pair of pants at the thrift store which has a good fit you like in the waist down to mid-thigh. If we try to alter the waist and butt area too much it can affect the pockets. We want to leave that alone. And we need to keep pockets in this world!

Turn the new pants you just bought INSIDE OUT and lay your good old well fitting pants over them. I don't like messing with the crotch area so I line up the crotch seams first. That way only the OUTER seams have the alterations. I mark with a pencil, pen, or marker along the outer seam the shape of the older pants onto the newer pair.

Sew a straight line up the lines you marked, cut off the excess fabric, and then turn the pants right side out.Β

This does work with simple shirts too as long as the material is similar. If the older clothing piece has STRETCHY fabric this trick will not work if the newer clothing fabric is not stretchy. So keep it jeans with jeans.
