Alternatively, how about a 2-3 hour round trip with them. This way you're not gone too long. Is this possible?

Maybe he likes dogs and likes helping people, both are possible and actually not that big a deal. I like your idea.

Yes, he knows about my little side, he adores it! 

Unfortunately he is also my only dog sitter atm.. 

I am contacting another dog sitter, but she is quite pricey and more for fit the emergency situations. 

 

I will discuss this also with him, maybe he has a solution!

 

My dog can be alone in his cage for about a 3-4 hours, so maybe a short trips would work.

But I would feel guilty for putting him is his cage when it's not really necessary

I say go for it! Dogs are totally alright in their crate for a while. Sounds like you need this.
