Your town.

….. Hi. *waves*

So , Monday at noon my whole towns power went out. We had stormy weather all weekend and I guess the wind and floods were so bad near the dam that it took out all of our towns power lines. We didn’t have power until 4 am the next day. Lucky me , I didn’t have to deal with it much because I don’t get home until almost 9pm anyways. Just hooked up my generator and made sure my food in the freezer wouldn’t go bad. Driving home was … eerie to say the least. Everything was pitch black , all the towns house lights off all the stores and street lights all off. I had to drive with my brights on the entire time.

BUT … something cool I noticed while driving home…. The whole town was just kind of … enjoying not having power. There was no panic in the town , I could hear generators going but everyone kept their lights off. Family’s had little candles or torch lights and tons of people were just sitting on their front porches watching the stars. It was really different than the other area I used to live in. People used to create chaos because they wouldn’t have power for a few hours. Here , people just star gazed and because all of the power was out , tons of deer came out that night and just walked through the town. We always get deer but it was WAY more than normal.

So I guess it got me thinking … what do you love about your city or town ? I was nervous moving here because this town is supposed to be “extremely right wing” but honestly… this is the most calm town I’ve ever lived in. I’ve had one incident with a crazy neighbor but the whole year I’ve lived here so far… this town is fucking great.

Obviously if you’re uncomfortable, don’t share what town you live in. I personally don’t give a fuck sharing , I live in Eatonville Washington. It’s a SUPER tiny town. Right below Mount Rainier , we’re basically at the left upper base. The longer I live here the more I see things to love.

1. Eatonville has a co-op. Tons of people in my town garden , including myself. The co-op takes produce from community members home gardens and sells them to the town out of a little store , and if you are in between jobs or having a hard time financially they love to help people out and even give away free produce to people. It’s just a little store that everyone in our town runs by themselves and they even special order vegan products for people who live up here because the closet “real store” is over 45 minutes away. The lady that owns the store is the cutest little hippie lady and she talks to EVERYONE in town.

2. EVERYONE MINDS THEIR FUCKIN BUSINESS. That’s not to say people aren’t nice , they are. Everyone waves at each other up here and is very friendly. They just… all keep to themselves. People don’t go knocking on each other’s doors all the time , there’s rarely kids screaming and running around in the streets. There’s not the typical neighbor gossip that I’ve seen on other towns I’ve lived. For example during the Fourth of July , one of my neighbors walked up to my yard. My first thought was “please don’t talk to me forever”. They introduced themselves , said if I ever leave for vacation they’d watch the house , shook my hand and said I had a lovely home and left. Awesome !

3. The animals brooooooo !!!!!!! While there are a lot of people who hunt in Eatonville , there is a WIDE respect for animals in this town. The same truck I saw with a deer on its hood coming back from a hunting trip last week literally slammed on his breaks just so he wouldn’t hit a squirrel in the middle of the road. As I said we get a lot of deer in this town , especially my front yard. (I don’t know why but they like one of my bushes in my front yard and they’re gunna eat the whole fuckin thing if they don’t stop) People never bug them , they just respectfully watch from their yards. A lot of people actually put deer feeders in their yards just so they come to their yard and nobody else’s lol.

People around here have tons of pets , from goats , cows , chicken , horses , ducks , hell even one of the neighbors got alpacas the other day. Don’t forget dogs and cats too.

4. Speaking of cats…. I am 99% convinced that Eatonville used to be a witches town. I have NEVER seen so many stray cats in my life. I’ve asked a few people that have lived in town for a long time , and they say it’s always been like this. Eatonville is notorious for having a shit ton of just …. Glorified town cats ? They don’t belong to anyone , they just eat rats or mice they find in town and the town appreciates it so people who live here leave bowls of food and treats for the town cats on their porches. The cats around here are like a natural cat police and it’s so cute. If you’re walking around town you’re more likely to have a cat walk up to you meowing begging to be pet before a person talks to you.

What do you like about your town ?

1. I like living in a rural area as I love to commune with nature, so I like this. I love trees.

2. I like that for the most part, I don't live in a snobby neighborhood where everything is expected to be a certain way. But you'll always have those people wherever you go, I guess. I can't live in an apartment complex because one of my dogs gets separation anxiety and will wind up annoying someone. I'd preferably like to live in a secluded place, away from people.

3. I like that I feel completely safe walking in my neighborhood at night. Most of the neighbors are very friendly (though there have been some domestic violent incidents that happened here) and multiple people will stop in their car and ask me if I'm okay if I walk at night. So I stopped walking at night, because although it's very sweet, I'd rather not be bothered while walking. I used to walk at night in the Summer time because it's too hot to walk during the day time.

4. I love the town's library. It's the best library I've ever been to. It's quite large and has a large park/outdoor area too. They have a reading program in the Summer time that I used to participate in. For every row of hours reading you complete, you put your name in one of the multiple raffles of your choice. Then at the end, they have a reading party where they serve food and we answer trivia questions about books for a chance at other prizes. And they pull the raffles at the end too. So there's lot of chances for everyone to win something. The lady who used to host it actually wound up moving though, and I just didn't enjoy it as much after that since she did such a good job. And then after covid happened, I guess that put an end to that. But I guess they might still be doing it now. I didn't check.

5. There's a graveyard near my house so I can talk to dead people any time I wish. And yes, I'm joking. Not about the graveyard part.

6. There are lots of deer here too and I love them. As I mentioned in a status once, there's two baby deer and I guess the whole family lives in my backyard. After researching feeding deer, I am now afraid to feed them after learning that corn is bad for deer and that's what is put in most deer feed. And also that they can become dependent on the food you give them and stop foraging so you have to introduce it very slowly and ween them off very slowly. But in the Winter time, they have a shortage of food, so maybe I'll try then. I don't know. There's also lots of stray cats around here as well. And neighbors also have chickens and goats. I find their sounds comforting.

7. Never gotten broken into since being here, so that's a plus lol. That has happened once when I lived on the border of a bad neighborhood.

There are a few things I don't like and one negative thing that happened but I won't talk about it because this is supposed to be a positive thread. I won't be in this town forever, but I'll enjoy the time while it lasts.

….. 👋🏻 Hi.

I really love the town I live in , it gives back to its community and it’s a really involved area while at the same time giving people their own privacy. The entire time we’ve owned this house we’ve had maybe three or four random people knock on our door but all with reasonable explanation.

Our town has a little commission based store , and it’s also a thrift / goodwill type store. I recently took four or five big big boxes full of my old clothes and stuffed animals and donated them. I think it’s a way better option than trying to haggle and sell them , people really need affordable clothes and the thrift in town takes them for free and sells them for crazy cheap. Win , win , win.

BUT , something I think is really fuckin dope our town does is leaving out a rack of coats and jackets for people in need during winter time. Without waver , they have the coats out. I think it’s a really sweet gesture for those in need and just shows the character and heart of the town I live in. They even have a sign just for the coats !

My town has a bounty box where surplus of produce from our gardens or orchards can be shared. That has "evolved" to people leaving books, baked goodies from the store, and other random junk 😅 But it's mostly veggies and fruits. I tend to raid it for rejects I can give my guinea pigs to snack on.
