opinions on a bad purchase

I recently bought a onesie, having looked at the sizing chart I really thought it would fit. Though it does technically fit, the awkward looseness of it makes me feel self-conscious so I likely won't ever wear it. The shop agreed to exchange the onesie as long as I pay the shipping to and from. The thing is, the shop doesn't carry the size I apparently need. Some of the brands this shop carries do seem like they run small, so it's possible the same size in a different brand may fit me fine. So here is where I need outside opinions, as I've not much experience in this area.

Would it be better/easier to pay the extra to exchange for something that still might not fit me?

Or might I have better luck seeking a trade with someone?

Either way I know I'll be out more money and time, though maybe a little less so if a local trade were possible. Decisions make me anxious so I would really appreciate some input, especially if something like this has happened to you/someone you know or if you have experience in trading items within the cg/l community.

If you like the style and design of the onesie you bought and the only issue is the sizing, maybe you could take it to an alterations shop? it might be a cheaper and faster alternative to returning it or trying to find a swap

I do like your idea but for privacy and anxiety reasons it isn't a good option for me in this instance. I appreciate your response

You can try to watch a YouTube tutorial and take in the sides yourself :0! A onesie basically has two side seams so you would put it on, make a row of safety pins to pin the extra fabric and you can just hand sew a straight stitch. It’ll make a fun activity and if you don’t like the alterations you can just cut the threads with scissors :3 I think if you at least do the safety pin method, you can get an idea of how the shop’s other onesies may fit.

In terms of trade/resell, I use Depop and Mercari and often find people reselling or looking to trade their onesies for very affordable prices. You can search up “ddlg” as a term and even find paci’s, toys, collars, etc.

I don’t know which shop you used, but sometimes doing returns/exchanges can be a pain :p. Although it takes longer, I usually prefer a refund (if allowed) and sending it back and then repurchasing.

I have decided not to exchange it, just feels like too much hassle for something that may still not work.

I don't think I should try to alter it myself, I've been extra stressed lately and that makes my hands unsteady. I appreciate the idea :)

I've not used either of those marketplaces, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to check them out. If nothing else I may save it for my local dungeon's next "yard sale".

I thank you both for your thoughts :)

As a tip going forward, it's always a good idea to get your exact measurements when you're planning on buying clothing online. A lot of people don't talk about it, and I think I actually learned to start doing it when I was looking into buying lolita clothing, but it's extremely helpful for any online purchase like that.

Getting a flexible tape measure that's made for taking sizes is really the best option, but I've been able to make a regular tape measure work in a pinch. Just be sure to remember that there might be a discrepancy between what you read and how the product will actually fit. There should be a sizing chart somewhere on the product page or the website in general, and from there you can see by centimeters or by inches how big each size is in different areas of the body. I always try to order a 1/2-1" larger than what I need, but you might not want to do that since the problem is that you got something too big. In any case, even if you can't get an exact idea, it's a lot better than trying to just order blind. ^^

Oh I know. I use to have my measurements memorized but I've not really needed them in the past few years, I'm certain they are different now lol. It's definitely time to remeasure. I appreciate your tip, otherwise it probably wouldn't have occurred to me to check back in on myself haha. Thank you for your thoughts :)
