I don't colour my hair but lots of my friends use colour bombs to boost their colour. Have you tried them

cool topic! i've been coloring my hair brightly for the last.. almost two years maybe? year and a half at least.

my tip kind of answers both your questions. mix white vinegar and water 1:1 and soak your hair in it after you rinse the color out. wait about 5-10 minutes (i usually baby out after about 3 or 4 and this still helps), then just rinse out with cool water. this will help it stay brighter longer.

i generally use manic panic. it is considered a stain instead of a dye. that means three things to me- it will keep staining your tub over and over and over. and it will last longer and be super brighter longer. and you will have an easier time jumping across the color wheel for your next color because this brand bleaches out really easy (use vol 30 processor with your lightener for a quick bleach).

here are some other tips/things i've learned:

  • want a pastel color? use your regular color and just add a touch to your favorite heavy conditioner/hair masque and it will be pastelized! with the manic panic, the color pretty much looks the same as it does in the mixing bowl as it does on your head. process usual time 30+ minutes.
  • if you've got brown hair to begin with (darker than 'dirty blonde') you're gonna need vol 30. at least for my hair. be careful with it and keep an eye on your hair by rinsing off the bleach on a few strands to see how it's doing every 10 or so minutes.
  • CONDITION THE CRAP OUTTA YO HAIR. i've read that getting the bleach part done at a salon will be easier on your strands, so if you can afford that, do that. i only wash my hair 2 or 3 times a week. when i do, i will deep condition it (last one i've used is 'It's a 10' and that is niiiice stuff $20 a good size jar). apply deep conditioner to damp hair not wet; keep a hand towel handy by the shower. then i apply a nice leave in conditioner (i'm on 'Miracle 7' right now and it's really great too). when i don't shampoo, i just apply some regular conditioner to it to fluff out the bedhead, then put a less pricey leave in conditioner in it to keep the frizz down. >>this is just my weird way i do things, who knows if the last bits really work but it couldn't hurt.
  • dry shampoo is another option for not shampooing often, i haven't personally tried it but some have.
  • if you're gonna try to have more than one bright color, use common sense. lighter colors go closer to the top of your head (think gravity and drip down when it's wet). keep like colors together so the blend looks natural instead of muddy. it WILL blend somewhat unless you have magic salon powers.
  • bleach bath is a thing and here's the link: http://www.xovain.com/hair/alle-hair  (it works pretty well and seemed less damaging if you don't have to go too many shades up)
  • UK sounds like they have cooler products on the market for this hobby ;_;
  • amazon is your friend for buying your supplies!

ok apparently i had a lot to say on this subject! i have some questions tooo.. how do you keep your hair healthy and prevent bleach breakage? is porosity really a thing and how do you prepare for how color will absorb into more porous hair? i also think we should have a bit at the end of each post for what colors you've done!

me: various pinks and purples, teal, pastel sea green mix (darker blue green at roots)

OH and any funny response stories you have about your wacky hair.

PS i just shaved the bottom 3 or so inches of my head and it feels AMAZING. anyone else do this?

To make it last longer, use shampoo and conditioner designed for color-treated hair. If you wash your hair often, maybe washing it less often. That part really depends a lot on the individual and how fast your hair produces oil though. Some people wash every day. Others wash once a week. If you're used to washing it once a day, you could try washing your hair only once every other day or so for a month and see if the rate of oil production slows. it usually does.

If you bleach the hair before you dye it, it will be more vibrant. Other than that, I'm not sure. There are probably some good products out there to give you the look you want. I like shine in  my hair, so I use pomade for the most part.

Well I have red hair that I dyed over a month ago, its not bad just the regrowth ^_^ I got mine done at a salon, so I'm not very experienced when it comes to it.

Taking care of it is annoying though. Honestly, lol. No more 3 minute showers.

  • It can't touch hot water or it bleeds.
  • Use cold water only, use a shampoo which has red dye in it.
  • Shampoo as little as possible.
  • I recommend washing it in a sink, and then holding a shower handle and showering your body.

i only have a few tips, as i don't color my hair too-too much. but, i've learned along the way: using cold water to wash your hair is always a good idea. lots of conditioner keeps it from being too fried or dry! even stay-in conditioning products work very well for that type of thing. it's especially key to use quite a bit of cond. right after dying, to seal in the color nicely! <3 hope this helps, miss mandie!

I had blue hair for awhile and before I had teal hair. I got it professionally done so I can't tell you what colors my hairstylist used but I'd wash my hair 1-2x a week and I would use Nioxin Number 2 whenever I did wash it. I would also deep condition my hair every week. I would wash with warm water and when I rinsed out my conditioner, it would be lukewarm to cool water- that helped maintain my color and vibrance.

Pouty,

Do you know anything about adding just one small pink streak to ple blonde hair that has had a keratin treatment? I want a streak that can be hidden easily or plopped on top (like less than half an inch). Would you need to use warm/cold water for that small of a strand? Just curious. Hmmmm. I usually wash with hot water just because I'm a hot shower person but now I'm wondering if it's affecting my highlights. Ugh

Thanks!

From my experience, it's hard to add color to hair that has had a keratin treatment. My hairstylist suggested that I put in my color before the treatment. I believe you'll be okay after a few months of having it though. I suggest washing and rinsing your hair with lukewarm to cool water because it closes your pores instead of leaving them open with hot water. I use to only wash/rinse with hot water and it did not keep my color very well :(

My hair is currently 3 colors. Brown on the under layer, purple in the middle layer and blonde on the top layer. I say layer because it's cut in a way the colors peek out at the ends when it's straight. I wash it as little as possible, use a color shampoo when I do and deep condition at least once a week. I had blue once but it didn't last long, the purple however, stayed for almost 12 weeks, which my colorist said was abnormal :/ but :)

I've had my hair the same color for about 3 years now. I use a blue/cool toner to lighten my hair and then the dye I use is Adore by Creative Image. I only really ever have to touch up my roots because of how well it stays in and doesn't bleed. Plus it doesn't have ammonia in it or any super harsh chemicals.

I use a shampoo/conditioner for colored treated hair as well as rinse with cold water the first few times after I've dyed it.

I am a blue/turquoise haired little :D And actually I only redye the thing around every 3 months and that's because my roots are starting to show.

It may sounds disgusting but don't over wash your hair ! My hair can stand being washed only once a week without being greasy so I'm lucky, but the more you wash it, the quicker it will fade.

Also, another thing that worked for me: Sulfates free shampoo, not easy to work with at first, but trust me it is worth it !

A really good brand to use is Ion Brilliance. It doesn't need any developer and it last me months.  As for making it last longer only wash every other time you shower. I have been dying my hair for almost 4 years now and I have used nothing but Ion.

You could also use Arctic Fox hair dye.

I've had my hair blue, red, and pink.

I really wish I could dye it purple but where I work I can't do that.

Pink, blue, purple ,❤️❤️❤️

My hair is a silvery lavender and I used ion colour brilliance to achieve it. (In titanium mixed with orchid). I generally wash my hair with cool water and then use a colour depositing condition. I made the conditioner by mixing my lavender shade with white conditioner.

Because it's so pale, instead of dry shampoo, I use baby powder in between washings. It sort of, kind of, gives a powdered wig look. Which I love. It really reminds me of that Marie Antoinette movie with Kirsten Dunst.

P.s - cream or oil based bleach is awesome, I'd really rec it.

Edit: I just realized how old this thread is :< sorry

There's a lot of really good replies! I don't really have anything to add on to it but remember you CONDITION and keep that hair happy. I bleach and had my color virgin hair dyed professionally into a pink ombre. I was too lazy to maintain my ends and I ended up having to get all the bleached ends (six inches) cut off. There's some color safe conditioners out on the market. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for.

Just a forewarning if you didn't already know. I'd hate for someone else to go through that!
