PapaGrayWolf Posted November 25, 2020 Report Posted November 25, 2020 To one and all, I wish you a happy, and most of all, a safe Thanksgiving. This is an odd holiday time for us all but things will be better next year. Let's be thankful for that. Interesting fact about Thanksgiving: The first Thanksgiving feast was long before the Pilgrim's mythical dinner in Massachusetts. In 1598 in San Elizario, Texas Spaniards celebrated a feast of thanksgiving. Then again in 1565 in St. Augustine, Florida there is evidence that such a feast was celebrated. The celebration in 1621, the event most closely associated with the United States' holiday is poorly documented and quite likely didn't happen as we are taught in elementary school. There was another such event that took place in Virginia in 1619 and is much better documented. But whether Texas or Massachusetts it's the act and spirit of giving thanks that counts. It shouldn't be associated with a particular religion other than that of the heart of each of us. So again, happy Thanksgiving to everyone. 1
Coco600 Posted November 26, 2020 Report Posted November 26, 2020 Happy Thanksgiving! thank you for sharing those facts. As a not-American living in the US I find it an odd holiday since I never celebrated it growing up. However, I always enjoy anything that combines food, connection and taking time to be grateful!
Guest liljeannie Posted November 26, 2020 Report Posted November 26, 2020 Happy Thanksgiving. It will be an odd one. We'll be using Zoom to connect with family. I hope everyone that celebrates it has a good day.
LittleTeacup Posted November 26, 2020 Report Posted November 26, 2020 I mean, there were many "days of Thanksgiving" well before the modern holiday was established, hehe. Including some not-so-great events regarding, to put it extremely mildly, settler clashes with Native Americans. Hence why many indigenous people in this country don't celebrate Thanksgiving. (Don't want to get political here so I'm not gonna go any farther). But it can also be a day to be grateful for our loved ones, the beautiful earth, and our life. A harvest feast day. Gratitude for the good things in our lives is important no matter who we are. I will be with my parents and my brother and his girlfriend. Perhaps we'll be able to set up a zoom call with Grandma who will be with my uncle and his two kids. I like seeing it as a family celebration and keep the Pilgrims out of it Turkeys however, will be always welcome. I love seeing wild turkeys! I have a majestic turkey tail feather I found on the ground four years ago and I keep it in a vase on my dresser.
