I have very much enjoyed playing at being a mermaid (or a seal or something similar) since I was a child - by the way, there is such a thing as mermaiding swimming curses these days. The monofin was invented to more easily teach the "butterfly" or "dolphin" swimming technique and there are absolutely stunning designs for "mermaid tails" to put over them and hold your legs together for training or just for fun:

If you're lucky you might find beginners curses nearby where you can try one out before spending a lot of money on your own tail.

I just recently bought myself a tail and feel so much more like a mermaid now. Best investment I've made. But I also sell sea animal items at conventions so I can wear the tail for those events as well. Definitely recommend FinFun Mermaids.
