Sooooo I got a call today. For a job interview! I am nervous as heck! This would be my first job... My first interview, and I was wondering if anyone would have some advice for me?

The job is Librarian Clerk if that helps with the answers.

Hey, congratulations on the interview! :D

Some advice:

  • Wear nice, professional looking clothes (a blouse and skirt, nice pants, etc)
  • Practice thinking of answers to common questions you might get asked (can you explain a situation where you had to resolve a conflict? What's something you've done that you're really proud of? What are you excited for most about this job?)
  • Be ready for some curveball questions like If you were an animal, what animal would you be? Hopefully you won't be asked anything weird, but it does happen sometimes. The purpose of such questions is to see how gracefully you handle the unexpected, and it doesn't much matter what answer you give as long as you remain calm.
  • Be kind and courteous to everybody you meet at the location of the interview. Smile!
  • It's important to have at least one question you want to ask them. They will ask you at the end of your interview "and do you have any questions for us?" You don't want to have to say no. Asking your interviewer a question conveys engagement and interest. Even something simple like what the policy is regarding break times will go a long way.
  • Also, familiarize yourself with their website/social media pages. You don't want to seem like you don't care about them. This also helps with coming up with questions. If you can ask a question about something you saw on their website, they will be impressed.
  • Bring a copy of your resume with just in case they don't have it.
  • Turn your phone off/or if you forget and it rings, just apologize and turn it off then.
  • Be on time! Know where you're driving. Plan to be early so you can relax a few minutes in the car or lobby.
  • Do your best to appear confident. You got this!
  • After the interview: later that day, send them a thank you note email. Almost nobody does this and it looks really good.

You might also like to role-play an interview with a family member. This will help your confidence and let you know the basics of what to expect.

Edit: Also since this will be a librarian clerk position, be ready to tell them your favorite book. ;) I'd be surprised if they don't ask something like that.

Congratulations! I just had my first day today at my new job and I now realize that it was noting to be nervous over.

Good luck!

Congrats!!!

My biggest advice is to be honest to any questions they might ask. Because the truth always comes out sooner or later.

The other advice I give is to wear nice clothes (not super professional, but not too clumsy either. A nice mid term) and show confidence in yourself :)

Whoa! I can't believe no one mentioned this yet!:

Look up interview questions for library clerks! The most pertinent thing I can think of is to know the dewy decimal system since librarians use it intimately and it should be second nature. If they don't mentioned it during the interview, you should.

Other notes:

- As LittleTeacup mentioned, bring your resume. As a good rule of thumb, I always bring 3.

Please bring a folder or portfolio holder to keep them straight; don't stuff them in a bag or fold them.

- Bring a blank notepad and pen to take notes with. And you should definitely take at least a few notes.

- Smile smile smile!

- Arrive early. Scope out the place and ask which sections you'll be working most in. (ie: children's, adult literature, non-fiction, etc....)

- Expect to expand on and elaborate on any single bullet in your resume

- Expect to be able to tell personal stories if they ask you an anecdotal question. For example: Have you ever had a conflict with a co-worker? What was the situation and how did you resolve it?

- Know how to answer the following questions:

What is your preferred style for management? (This is basically asking how is the best way for your supervisor to communicate with you.)

Why do you want this job?

What are some skills you have that would be particularly fitting for this position?

What's your favorite book/piece of literature and why?

What is your schedule and availability?

- Look up resources that the library offers so you can show you've done your research. ie: "I saw that you offer a teen board club game day on weekends, would I be able to aid in that?" (If you have any ideas to increase attendance in any of their programs, cherry on top!)

- After the interview, send an email to the interviewer (by name!) thanking them for their time. Follow-up is allowed a week from date of interview.

- If you're feeling super nervous about it, feel free to let the interviewer know when you first begin that you're a bit nervous because you're very excited for such an opportunity. It's okay to let them know.

- If there's a question they ask that you're not sure on, didn't catch, or don't understand, it is okay to ask them to repeat it or elaborate more.

- Take your time answering questions. Better to take a few seconds to think things over than to blurt out a half-decent response.

- Ask them what your day-to-day tasks would be, if they haven't already told you.

- At the end of the interview, thank them and shake their hand again.

I think that's all for now..... congrats and good luck!
