I am fucking furious about this.

Me too!

It makes me sad. I gained so many followers through tumblr and to think it'll all disappear. Tumblr is/was a source of inspiration and pervy stuff and meh. It makes me sad.

Tumblr alternatives

Tumblr will ban adult content on 17 December.

Tumblr made the announcement in a blog post and its Help Center article contains more information about what exactly will be permitted and not permitted.

I've seen a number of FetLife users asking where to move their Tumblr blogs to. Here are some options:

FetLife

Yeah, right here. I'm new to FetLife so I'm not sure if it's possible to embed photos in a journal entry. If not, that might be a major limitation. Tumblr is a highly visual platform so if that's important to you, this may not be a good option.

WordPress.com (freemium)

WordPress.com allows mature content ("including text, images and videos that contain nudity, offensive language, and mature subject material") provided it is marked as Mature in their system. However, there are limitations. For example, it doesn't allow anything "that can be considered pornographic", and it's not very clear what that means exactly. You can read more about the policy here.

WordPress.com is basically free, but there are also paid plans and upgrades you can pay for. These are optional and it's very easy to run a WordPress.com blog for free or very cheaply.

WordPress.org (not free)

Many people may not realise that WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two separate things. They're different in many ways that I won't get into here, but in short WordPress.com is a publishing platform that is all inclusive while WordPress.org is a free, open source software.

You get more freedom with WordPress.org, but you'll need to purchase your own domain and web hosting. That's where the costs come in. You'd also need to find a web hosting company willing to host a sex site, and some developers won't allow their plug-ins to be used on sex sites.

Dreamwidth (freemium)

Dreamwidth is an online journal service based on the LiveJournal codebase. When LiveJournal, a Russian service, updated its terms of service requiring user content to comply with Russian laws, many users left and went to Dreamwidth.

Dreamwidth is now welcoming Tumblr refugees. I've been using it since the LiveJournal exodus of 2017. It's not as slick as Tumblr, but if you're looking for a free service, this might be your best choice.

Basic Dreamwidth is free and then you can pay for more options such as a higher number of visible comments, the ability to add polls to your journal, and Google Analytics.

Kinky Blogging

Another option is Kinky Blogging, but I've never used it so I can't comment on it one way or the other.

What's that built with?

If you've got a favourite sex blog or website outside of Tumblr and you're wondering what platform it's on, you can take a look with the free online tool https://builtwith.com.
