Beware those who think they know better than you. Be assertive and advocate for yourself, lest you end up being left in the dark having self righteous people with an empathy deficiency make important decisions for you behind your back. Decisions that affect you and that you should have a say in. Only you can know what's best in order to run your own life, not anyone else. In a perfect world I would have no need to bring this up in the first place. Demand that permission is always asked. And remember: there is always someone who looks for easy targets to take advantage of, so don't come off as prey.
