Little girl logic -story-

It has been a long day and as I pull into the driveway, I sit inside the car for a few minutes and wait for my head to clear up. I breathe in deeply and try to shut out the problems in the real world so I won’t bring them in with me. I hear one last song before I shut the car off and make my way to the front door. I fumble the keys in my hand and as I try to slide the key in the keyhole, I drop them. I kneel to get my keys and I listen to the sounds coming from within the house.

“Teddy! Daddy is home!” the sound of little feet makes their way from one side of the house to the other.

“C’mon teddy! Daddy said we had to clean up before he came home. Daddy is going to be mad because I was doing all the work and you never helped out”

I laugh and take my time getting up as I listen more to a sweet little voice arguing with a stuffed teddy I had given her when we first me. “Oh no! Teddy! You forgot to put daddy’s food in the microwave! You are going to make daddy starve!”

I get up and jiggle the door handle as I slide the key inside the keyhole. The door squeaks as I slowly open it. The smell of something burnt fills the air and the sound of little feet running towards the door gets louder. I open the door and stand inside the frame of the door. I look down and see my little princess holding her brown teddy close to her body. The rays of the sun coming in through the door shine against her little face making it glow. She stands in her knee high white socks and red sparkly shoes. Her white dress with red and pink flower pattern sways as a gust of wind flows in through the door. She smiles and looks at me with her two pony tails, one higher than the other but you can see she put in a lot of effort to look pretty for daddy coming home.

“DADDY!” she yells behind the head of her teddy. “You’re home finally. You took forever to come home”.

I look around the house, crayons on the floor, three different kinds of cereal bowls on the table, four glasses of water and juice on the floor. Coloring books and sticker booklets spread throughout the living room floor and glitter in every nook and cranny of the house.

“I know daddy, it is a mess in here but teddy did not help at all. I would clean up and he would make a bigger mess”. She holds out her teddy and turns it around to face her, giving him a mad face. “I told him daddy, I told him that you needed the house cleaned and he did not listen. I was going to make you dinner also but teddy was just such a pain. I promise that I will make sure teddy does a better job tomorrow”

I cross my arms, look down at my little girl with a disappointed face. I nod my head and frown at her letting her see that she did not do her chores that she was given. My arms unfold, one of my hand moves to my hip while the other one slides through my hair. “Baby girl, this is not good. You had chores to do and you did not do a single one of them. I am very disappointed in you little one!”

Her head lowers, her teddy now dangles from her arm and little sniffles start to come out. Her eyes begin to water and her bottom lip begins to tremble. She attempts to look up to see me but her own disappointment within her makes her head fall back down. Once again I look around the house with a disappointed look and slowly look towards my little girl and watch her little cheeks glistening from her flowing tears. I try not to get mad but after two days of chores not getting done, I begin to feel a little more upset and just as I’m about to raise my voice…

                                                                                                    DING

Without losing a beat, she raises her head with a big smile and yells “DADDY!!! I Lied, I did make you dinner!” She runs to the kitchen and runs back to me holding a plate with burnt spaghetti-o’s. The large oven mitts cover her entire arms and her little face is now glowing as if she had never cried.

I can’t help but raise an eyebrow and smile at her as she struggles to keep the hot plate in her little hands covered by the huge oven mitts. “Pumpkin, how long have you been cooking the spaghetti-o’s for?” I reach to get the hot plate from her, I place it on the table and by now I have already forgotten that I was upset.

“I’m sorry daddy. I was trying to surprise you by making you dinner while teddy cleaned the house.” She grabs teddy and begins to look a bit worried as she moves her foot against the floor. “I didn’t know how long to cook it for. I thought if I would microwave it for five minutes at a time for an hour and kept it warm until you came home. I did not mean to burn dinner daddy.”

I laugh and kneel beside her opening my arms and letting her know it is okay and I am not upset anymore. She looks at me with a big smile and runs towards me with teddy by her side. Her arms wrap tightly around my neck and her lips press gently against my cheeks. I can feel her sticky lip balm sticking against my cheek and neck as she continues to attack me with a furry of kisses. Her hug gets tighter around me as she slowly crawls on my bent knee and claims it as her seat.

“Sweetheart, don’t worry about dinner. How about we go get some chicken nuggets and go to the park and feed the duckies?” She screams loudly as I say duckies, she swings her legs back and forth in excitement and wiggles her plump rear against my thigh.

“Yes daddy! I want to go feed the duckies chicken nuggets and then we can bring them home and we can take care of them and then we can name all of them and we can have them all sleep in our bed!” I shake my head and laugh softly to myself thinking about my little girl wanting to feed nuggets to the duckies.

“Sweetheart, duckies don’t eat nuggets, they have their special food. You know this.” I get up and wrap my arms around her little waist and make my way to the door. I look around the house seeing the mess that awaits me when I come back. “Pumpkin, I will make a deal with you okay? We will get nuggets, feed the duckies, no, we can’t bring the duckies home but you can play with them for as long as you want. But, when we get back home, you are going to help daddy clean up the place okay?”

She wiggles out from my arms, stands in front of me and holds teddy tight. She slowly crosses her arms and brings one finger up to her chin. I see her deep in thought, her eyes looking around then she locks them against teddy. She places teddy down and whispers something into his ear as she points her finger around. She looks back at me, then back at teddy and smiles at him before turning to face me and smiles. “We have a deal Daddy. Let’s go before it gets dark and the duckies go to sleep.” She raises her arms at me, signaling that she is ready to be picked up and taken to the car. My arms wrap around her and with a quick swoop I pick her up and make my way to the door.

I close the door behind me, lock it and take my little princess to the car. I look at her little curios on why she left teddy as I start to buckle her in her seat. I stand there at her door and finally decide to ask the reason for leaving teddy. “Sweetheart, you never leave teddy behind. Why did you leave him and what did you whisper to him?” She looks at me and with her hand she gestures to come closer to her. I bend down and she whispers in my ear. “Daddy, I know you are tired and we made a deal to clean the house when we get back. I told teddy that we are going to be out late and I wanted time with daddy tonight. I told teddy that he is to clean the house while we are out and in return I would bring him two chicken nuggets.” I shake my head and place my palm against my face. “See daddy! You made a deal and I made a deal too. Its okay daddy, I got you.” Her lips smooch together as she demands a kiss. I lean to her and press my lips against hers and give her a deep passionate kiss. I close the door and make my way to the rear of the car and look up at the sky…

….”How do I get stuck with all the cleaning?”
