Greenegirl Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 I was just wondering if there were any other small business owners on here? A friend and current coworker are trying to open our own small business and are reaching out for any advice we can get. We know we want to open a bakery that has a large gluten free recipe base as well as regular sweets and breads, but we are having troubles with starting our business plan. Thanks for any tips and tricks! 1
Guest 7rae_4_lyfe Posted May 10, 2015 Report Posted May 10, 2015 There is a lot to consider - business structure ( LLC, sole proprietor, partnership, etc.) - basically how you want the business organized. Something else to look at is overhead costs vs customer base - you want to make sure that any fixed and allocable costs for the product don't exceed the cost to sell - that sounds simple enough but it is something that a lot of people overlook. You also wanna look into food service laws ( Google cottage food laws). You can PM me if you wanna talk more about it - there is a lot to think about but I would be happy to talk through things with ya good luck! 1
Guest Foxling Posted May 13, 2015 Report Posted May 13, 2015 I'm in the process of starting an editing business, still looking for advice as well, though things in the Netherlands are probably different from the US. Good luck, in any case!
lacenliquor Posted November 28, 2024 Report Posted November 28, 2024 Have you noticed how many business owners are outsourcing tasks these days?

This is what I keep talking about. Spammers posting affiliate links. They post something on random threads and once they know that post is clear they return and edit it to add links. If you see this report it. They will eventually overrun a forum if not kept in check. 2 1
Tasherz Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 I'm trying to do a side business with my mom and gma did selling handmade crochet items!!! We aren't doing great yet but we are really tiring. From what I can tell social media presence seems to be a big thing for what I'm doing. Honestly, I would try googling a business play and see if you can find something that makes sense to you and that you can follow! Hope that helps at least some 😁 let us know how it goes! And good luck!! 1
shadowrider Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 Sadly this is from 2015 and the O.P hasn't been active since 2017. I'm curious how they did. This might be a topic someone could add to the Life section. How to start a side hustle/home business. Maybe cover time management, and how to approach tough decisions like when to buy and when to make it yourself to maximize profits. How to handle quality issues and keep up with production. How to scale as you grow. Possibly a breakdown of some online sites for marketing your products. I'm sure there are more than a couple of us trying to get something going on the side. 1 1
Tasherz Posted December 6, 2024 Report Posted December 6, 2024 That sounds like a really cool idea! If I remember when I get home tonight maybe I'll make the post and see what I can stir up! 1 1
Marlowe Posted December 10, 2024 Report Posted December 10, 2024 I more or less run a small factory, if that counts. All the accounts, stock etc. Perhaps I could offer some ideas for the life post? 1
NR_Daddy Posted December 11, 2024 Report Posted December 11, 2024 (edited) Partnerships can be very unstable ground and full of pitfalls. Friendships can quickly turn sour. You have to be reading from the same page as each other, from the start and into the future. People's choices and directions of life can change at the blink of an eye, and as "partners" there will always be a time where compromises are needed. That can be difficult for those with a clear direction and ambition vs a less ambitious person, or one who sees a different direction. If it was my choice, I'd go into it on my own as boss as a sole trader then change to Ltd company if it takes off. Only employ people if necessary. It's going to be hard to make a living for more than one person, especially to begin with. Businesses take time to build. Edited December 11, 2024 by NR_Daddy spelling
