A Cracked Pot

 

 An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots. Each pot hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her shoulders. Every day, she used this device to carry water to her home.

One of the pots was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. The other had a deep crack in it and leaked. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this situation occurred daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, the cracked pot spoke to the woman one day by the stream, saying, “I am ashamed of myself because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.”

The old woman smiled and replied, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot’s side? I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walked back home you watered them and made them grow. For two years, I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table and give to my friends and neighbors. Without you being just the way you are, there would not have been this special beauty to grace our homes and lives.”

Sometimes, it’s the “cracks,” or what we perceive as imperfections, in this reality that create something unexpected and beautiful. These “cracks” allow something to change and ultimately make the whole much richer and more interesting. Every thing and every being has its own unique purpose and destiny to fulfill.

The Wise Woman’s Stone

 A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.

“I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me something more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.

Lady Gets on a Bus
A lady gets on a public bus. Without saying a word, she gestures to the bus driver by sticking her thumb on her nose and waving her fingers at the driver.
The driver acknowledges the lady, turns to her and uses both hands in the same type of gesture and waves all his fingers at her.
The woman holds her right arm out at the driver and chops at it a few times with her left hand.
Then the driver puts his left hand on his right bicep and jerks his right arm up in a fist at her.
The woman then cups both of her hands under her breasts and lifts gently. So the driver places both of his hands at his crotch and gently lifts up.
Then the woman frowns, runs a finger up between her derriere, and gets off the bus.
There is another woman sitting in the front row of the bus who witnessed the whole exchange.
She speaks up, “That was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen on a public bus! What the
hell were you doing?”
“Listen lady,” states the gruff bus driver, “the lady that got on the bus before was a deaf-mute.
She asked me if the bus went to 5th Street. I said no, we go to 10th Street. She asked if we make many stops. I told her that this was the express. She asked if we go by the dairy, and I told her we go by the ballpark. She said “Shit, I’m on the wrong bus!” and got off.”

Six little stories with lots of meaning.

 

1. Once all the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered but only 1 boy came with an umbrella. 

That is faith.

 

2. When you throw babies up in the air they giggle and laugh knowing you will always catch them.

That is trust.

 

3. Every night we go to bed not knowing if we will wake up the next day. Yet we still set our alarms.

That is hope.

 

4. We make plans for tomorrow and for the future not knowing what the future holds for us.

That is confidence.

 

5. We see suffering and heartache all around us, but we still get married and have families. 

That is love.

 

6. On an old man's shirt was written "I am not 80 years old, I am sweet 16 with 64 years experience."

That is attitude.

Remember, good friends are the jewels of life, difficult to find and impossible to replace. So treat them that way.

Be careful who you follow

 Several years ago Jean-Henry Fabre, a French Naturalist, did an experiment with Processionary Caterpillars. These caterpillars feed on pine needles and move through the forest in long processions.  One caterpillar leads and the others follow with their heads snugly placed on the caterpillar in front of it.  Each plods along assuming the lead caterpillar knows where he is going.

 One experiment Fabre did was to entice the caterpillars onto the rim of a large flowerpot.  Eventually he got them all connected so each had its head on the rear extremity of the one in front, forming a circle without beginning or end.  Instinct directed them to start moving, so they went round and round the rim of the flowerpot.

 Fabre assumed that at least one would eventually realize they were on a useless march and break the circle.  But he was surprised as this creeping, living circle continued to go around the rim in a mindless journey to nowhere.

 They continued their relentless pace for seven days before sheer exhaustion and starvation finally overcame them. They were so focused on following the one in front of them that they neglected to see that in the center of the pot Fabre had placed plenty of food and water that could have saved their lives.

 Fabre wondered why these caterpillars didn’t stop and partake of the needed nutrients their bodies craved.  Fabre concluded that they were “… following instinct, habit, custom, tradition, precedent, past experience, ‘standard practice’, or whatever you want to call it, but they were following it blindly.”  His final conclusion was that “They mistook activity for accomplishment.  They meant well, but got no place.”

 

 

You have to be able to change direction or adjust your course as needed to make it in life. Not everything you do will get you where you want to go. Don't be afraid o venture off in a new direction.

One tree makes a million match sticks but one match can destroy a million trees.

Circumstances can change in an instant so don't devalue or hurt anyone along your journey. You may feel powerful or invincible today but in the blink of an eye you could be humbled and weak. Be good and do good in life and try to see things from different perspectives before passing judgment on others.
